Jean was the third son of Jean Poisson and Barbe Proust. He was baptized in Mortagne Perche in 1618, with another ancestor, Jean Guyon as godfather. He arrived in Canada before August 1638, when he took inventory of the goods of a deceased. He witnessed a wedding the following October and in November 1639 he was present at the sale of the personal effects of another ancestor, Guillaume Hebert. Some time after that he went home to France where he wed Jacqueline Chamboy in Mortagne in 1644.
He arrived back in Quebec in mid summer 1647 with his wife, two daughters, and two sisters. In the spring of 1649 he had a son, Francois Poisson. Then the family was living in Champlain on rue St Anne, not far from the store of the Hundred Associates. It is believed they moved across the river to Trois-Rivieres that fall, where they start appearing in the church register.
Jean Poisson was a gunsmith and locksmith by trade. He repaired some locks for the well known interpreter Jacques Hertel, Sieur de Freniere. When Hertel's estate was settled in 1651 he owed Jean Poisson 41 livres for the locks installed in his house.
Jean received a land grant in June 1651. Just two days later during the feast of Corpus Christi a cannon exploded, injuring his arm. He was placed in a boat and transported to Quebec where he remained in the hospital for six months. While there he missed the wedding of his sister in Montreal. His wife went to represent the family.
In 1652 history swept our ancestor into a tragic event. Four men left the fort at Trois-Rivieres August 18, 1652. They encountered eight canoes of Iroquois . Two of the men were lucky enough to be killed on the spot. Two others were taken off for torture and death. The Governor of Trois-Rivieres was the very macho Guillaume Duplessis-Kerbodot. He took fifty men from the fort and some Indian friends and went after the Iroquois, against the advice of another more prudent ancesstor, Pierre Boucher.
They rowed vigorously upstream for several leagues, when they sighted some Iroquois on the bank signaling them. The Governor headed straight for them, beached his canoe and waded into the mud to be shot, as were seven of his companions. Another seven were captured. A few days later, an Iroquois shield was found at the battle site. Written on the shield, "Normanville, Francheville, Poisson, laPalme, Turcot, Chaillou, Saint-Germain, Oneidas, and Mowhawks. So far, I have only lost a fingernail." It is believed that this was written by Normanville. Thus ended our ancestor, Jean Poisson.
