Pam Ramoska, I had tried to send an extensive message but lost it by hitting the wrong key. But my Poindexter's are from Franklin County, Virginia, also farmers, going back to 1830-1840. We are African-American, but our name started with a Cherokee girl whose name when translated into English was Poindexter. She became pregnant by a Lt. Corporal named Anderson Early (don't know the race--probably white) and was placed with a slave family. She had several children--some who were sold (names changed). She kept the first child who was allowed to keep her Indian name (Poindexter). She married a slave (for the White Burrell family) who took her name and became Nelson Poindexter. They had 3 girls and 2 boys in the family, and moved from Franklin County to Pittsburgh, PA. I only know of one of the children, Andrew Steven(s) Poindexter, who around the 1880s and 1890s fathered Henry Poindexter, Lonnie, Sam, William, John, Eliza, Marguerite (still living--Alzheimers),and Bertha. Henry, born in 1894 (d. 1930), fathered my father, Garland Rhoudolph Poindexter (there are six of us from one wife and five from another wife), Vernon Stephenson Poindexter, Henry Montell Poindexter, and Pauline Lillian (Poindexter) Haskins. Some of my names are either the same or similar to yours. I have pictures of the older Poindexters put together for a family reunion. You may email me if you wish at [email protected]. Good luck in your search!
