I have this very interesting letter from a fellow in Caldwell co it explains if correct ,a second ReubenPoe .I was really taken aback by this because the research from Edmund Aluis down shows a connection in some ways to the Wilkes Co Poes, not to the Simon Poe family, The research here however seems very good they have some information that is not found on any sites I have been to .perhaps this explains things could both Stephen Poe and Simon had a Reuben ?This Ransome Cook Poe who married Anna
Straughn is definately from the Simon or Stephen Poe family , however I would nothave put Edmund Aluis with this group but with the Wilkes Co Poes .I am thinking this is a break through for someone ,or further confusion. I have Henry W Poe and Edmund Poe as being near the Lenoir family.I have them as sons of William and Elizabeth Bray Poe another son Raliegh named a son Alvis it is a small leap to go from that to Edmund AluisThe message was as follows
Mrs Perkins your message was saved and promptly buried in otheremails.
My Lenoir family in 1799 had settled in the Yadkin Valley of NC in what at
that time was Wilkes County (now Caldwell County).General William Lenoir(my
GGGGgrandfather) had built his home called Fort Defiance on the banks of the
Yadkin river about 23 miles upstream from the present city of Wilkesboroand
about 7 miles from the present city of Lenoir, NC.The home wascompleted
in 1792.He and his eight children were living there in1799.You can locate
Fort Defiance by going to it's website atfortdefiancenc.org. Later his
children settled in other homes nearby with theexception of his son William
Ballard who moved to Tennessee (current city ofLenoir City, TN) in 1803 to farm
his father's 5,000 acres there.
Here's what little I know so far about the Poe family. As you mayknow the
name Poe is well known in the city of Lenoir, NC.Allan LenoirPoe was born
8-14-1926,He was the son of Eugene Allan Poe (b. 8-14-1898,same birthday
as Allan) and Rosa Virginia Lenoir.Eugene Allan Poe was theson of Edgar
Allan Poe (b. 4-15-1868) and Maude Minerva Eugenia Miller. Both Eugene and
Edgar served as commissioners and mayors of Lenoir, NC.Edgar Allan Poe was the
son of Edmund Aluis Poe and Elizabeth AmandaCorpening.Edmund was the son
of Ransome Cook Poe and Anna Straughn.Ransome was the son of Reuben Poe who
was the son of Simon Poe, Jr. who was theson of Simon Poe, Sr. I wish I had
more dates for you.
That's what little I know so far.But there are dozens of boxes ofpapers
here still to be explored. There are hundreds of land grants, landsales,
maps and descriptions which I've unboxed so far pertaining to the Lenoirfamily
properties.I've not studied them closely as of yet but willkeep my eyes
open for anything referring to Poe lands. It's excitingto see these old maps
showing creeks, ridges, rivers, etc. and to try topinpoint the location from
what I know about the area.As the Poes and theLenoirs were both in this
area of NC at that time and considering all of thevarious tracts of land
which the Lenoir family owned at that time (over 23,000acres) it is very likely
that something will turn up.
Merry Christmas and please keep in touch. These papers are even more
interesting when there are particular items to search for.
