I am looking for info on the parents/family of Ellen Pocock, my gggrandmother. She was born 1832 in Mortlake, Surrey, England, the daughter of John Pocock and Ellen Hubbard. She died Jan 25, 1881 of colon cancer, at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London. Her death certificate lists her as Eliza.
She married John Humble 24 April 1862 in Surrey. Witnesses to the marriage were John and Ellen Pocock ( I'm assuming her parents) and F. Wigley. This was John' 2nd marriage.
They had 3 children, Alice Mary Louisa b: 1862, Harry b: 1863 (my great-grandfather), and Ellen Jane b: 1865.
John Humble was a chemist/surgical assistant, and a known gambler. Family story is that he gambled with members of the royal family staff, and eventually killed himself over bad gambling debts. Another story is that my great-grandfather, Harry, either ran away at age 16, or because he was in some kind of trouble, his mother, Ellen, secured him a last minute passage on a ship out of England. It is thought that he went to Canada first and then worked his way down into the U.S., where he ended up in TX/OK area.
Because of the messages posted here about the Canadian Pocock's, I was wondering if there might have been a connection, and his mother had sent him to live with relatives.
