Does anyone else have Sergeant John of Dedham, Medfield and Deerfield for ancestor?
Just discovered him and his most interesting story. He and his family were among the earliest settlers of Deerfield, MA in 1673. His daughter Hannah and husband Nathaniel Sutcliffe/Sutlief also. After the outbreak of King Phillip's War and the death of his youngest son at the "Bloody Brook" massacre, John abandoned Deerfield along with the other settlers. But he returned in 1677 and tried to rebuild his home on the north side of the village which had been burned. Alas, he and several companions were taken prisoner by Indians, eventually taken to Chambly, Quebec and he was burned at the stake there, perhaps as a token sacrifice since most of the Deerfield/Hadley prisoners were ransomed.
