Hi Doug,
On Dec 2, 1822 John Ply JR bought 100 acres on a branch of Muddy Creek in Stokes County, NC from Jesse Styres. When he sold the same tract of land on Oct 20, 1826, he was not designated as JR.
At that time designation of a man as JR was used to indicate that he was the younger of two men of the same name in the county. Therefore, the change in designation for this young man indicates that an older John Ply was in Stokes in Dec 1822, but not there in Oct 1826.
I presume that the older John Ply removed from Stokes between 1820 & 1826, and that the younger John Ply was preparing to move when he sold his property in 1826.
Do you know where they were in 1830?
I expected to find two John Ply Households listed in the 1830 US Census; one household consisting of a young couple with two or three children under the age of 10, and the other household consisting of a couple in their fifties and daughter around age 20. There were two John Ply households in the 1830 census, however neither of them fits Expectations. One was in Muskingum County, Ohio (consisting of one male <5, two males 5-10, one male 15-20, one male 20-30, one male40-50, one female 5-10, one female 10-15, & one female 40-50), and the other was in Steuben NY (consisting of 2 males 5-10, one male 40-50 & one female 40-50).
