The Jane Plunket of interest is a mystery. She is my great grandmother. The LDS-IGI record shows her marriage to James Charles Lardent (my great grandfather) on 04 April 1848 in Orleans Parish (New Orleans), Louisiana. The record does not show his first given name, only "Charles." Jane was apparently an immigrant from Ireland, and was probably born between 1820 and 1830, since James Charles was born 30 Oct 1823. Five children were born between August 1849 and November 1857, four sons and one daughter. However, the fifth child, a son named George, was, inexplicably, born in Handsboro, Mississippi, a town which no longer exists and has now been absorbed by Gulfport. Jane's father's name was John. Except for the Bible of James Charles and the IGI record, I have found no other reference to Jane Plunket.
In about 1861-1862, James Charles was in the Confederate Army in New Orleans. He was transferred to Selma, AL to work in the Arsenal in Selma. He remained in Selma after the war and married another woman. Two of the sons were apparently killed fighting a Mississippi River flood, according to a family tradition. The other two sons joined their father in Selma. Apparently Jane Plunket must have died sometime around 1864-1866, else James Charles abandoned her and she abandoned several of her children.
CAn any of the Plunket(t) researchers out there shed any light on the mystery of this Jane Plunket?
