Lenore, I hadn't heard about that scheme perpetrated against the PLOWMAN family. However, it appears to have been a common scheme from about 1870-1890s. For instance, the CHILCOAT family was told that their forebears had a 99 year lease to land that was now located in the heart of downtown Baltimore City. They contacted other CHILCOATs throughout the U.S. in order to find old bible records, prepare depositions, etc. The ``attorney" and their money disappeared. Another scheme was perpetrated against the Gorsuch family, they being persuaded to join other claimants to a Gorsuch estate in England. Also, there was a scheme that took advantage of the Stansbury family, although I cannot remember the nature of that one.
