REDSTREAK(E)-REDSTRAKE FAMILY 13 Generations in North America Acknowledgments: Special thanks to William Laimbeer, Philadelphia Historical Society, Dr. Robert W. Harper, history professor, Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ, and Thomas Bowen, editor and publisher, Today's Sunbeam, Salem, NJ. Disclaimer: History is not just a record of events; facts are elusive without access to people of the past. To reconstruct the most probably path, one must exercise imagination and empathy, whilst striving to maintain truth. Bill Redstreake (1932-____ ). FIRST Generation in North America: John-the-Finn, a.k.a. JOHN REDSTREAK, born in Varkus, Finland, abt. 1620. Cooper and fur trader on both shores of Hudson's south river (Delaware R) in "New Sweden" (1637-1655), then lower portion of "Nieuw Nederland" (1656-1664), then, after the Dutch lost their south river, he continued to trade in the renamed region, "West New Jersey" (1664-?). First wife: Unknown, believed to be a Flemish or Dutch Walloon woman from "de Vereenigde Netherlandts" (the United Netherlands). Consort (2nd wife): "Walela" (Hummingbird), sometimes called Bright Star, a member of the Unami/Unalactigo tribes of the Leni Lenapes (later called "the Delawares"). SECOND Generation: JOHN REDSTREAKE (born between 1660-1670 in Nieuw Nederland, if born before 1664 -- or in West New Jersey, if born after 1664.) His mother was 1st (?) or 2nd wife (?) of John-the-Finn. This John Redstreak(e) was a fur trader and farmer in what is now the Penn's Neck region of NJ. His 1st wife: Unknown. Then, he md. twice-widowed Frances Go(o)dwin/Godwyn on 9/29/1714, "contrary to (Quaker) discipline" -- assume John was a Baptist. Quote is from Hinshaw's Quaker Records, Vol. II, p.93. ( Frances Go(o)dwin, widow of Thomas Chandler, who died in Philadelphia on 7/13/1694, md. 2nd husband/ Edward Goodwin in 1700 and had 4 sons; then after her 2nd husband died, she married John Redstreak in 1714.) THIRD Generation: JOHN REDSTREAK (1700?-1737), owner of "New Netherlands Farm" (a vast plantation, which may have been purchased from his father-in-law John Pledger Esq.). In 1726, this John Redstreak married Elizabeth Pledger, dtr. of John Pledger Esq. (1680-1743/44) and his 1st wife Dorothy Roberts. Elizabeth was a granddaughter of John Pledger (1650-1702?), a ships carpenter, who came to Nieuw Nederland (later named West New Jersey) on the eastern shore of Hudson's south river BEFORE 1664 on a Dutch ship -- most probably "de Onrust" (the Restless) or "de Walvis" (the Whale) -- with his "cousin" (brother-in-law) Hypolite LeFevre to negotiate for the land at "Varkens Bloed" (Pigs Blood), a former Dutch whaling post (near "Fort Elsborg"), which became "Fenwicke's Colony" (now Salem, NJ), the 1st permanent Quaker settlement in North America. NJ Will of John Redstreak, 12/17/1737: Leaves to eldest son, John, land and marsh (500 acres), known as Meclombe Island." When John Redstreak(e) died in 1737, his wife Elizabeth Pledger Redstreak(e) was pregnant with Pledger Redstreake. (After John's death, Elizabeth md. 2nd husband/ Anthony Casparson; then md. 3rd/ Edmund Weatherby). Descendants of Elizabeth's uncle Joseph Pledger (elder brother of John Pledger Esq.), who arrived in Salem (at age 2) in 1675 with his mother, moved to South Carolina, then other generations of Pledgers moved to Georgia and Texas. (10 Pledgers from Georgia served in the Civil War.) For additional information about 1st PLEDGERS in North America, access internet listings for -- John Pledger ...
