Indeed, I have heard the same kind of thing.

If I run across anything more that would be of interest, I'll be sure to post it.

I sure found a lot on a black woman named Mary Ellen Pleasant, in San Francisco at the turn of the century...she was quite fascinating, and somewhat notorious, as it turns out. An early civil rights pioneer, among other things. So far as I can tell, however, the only connection is the name. I fear that will be only the first of blind alleys I'll walk down with this stuff.
