It was really interesting to discover your (2 year old!)message. I hope you are still out there!
I too am directly descended from this Thomas Player. My grandfather Sidney was a grandson of Thomas Player and Mary Elizabeth Woodier. My Grandfather's parents were Thomas (eldest son of Thomas/Mary) and Sarah Louise Boston Browne. This Thomas (my GGrandfather) was the elder brother of Alfred - your grandfather.I have a copy of your grandfather's birth certificate (born 8th May 1876 at 10 Craven Street, Coventry)when my GGF was 13 - plus a couple of other birth/marriage certs.
It sounds like you have got further than I did as you have gone back a generation further (John/Patience is a new one on me!)I did a brief flurry of research 30 years ago as a teenager (pre-internet obviously)but have not extended it since.
I did explore the Coventry Player connection a bit though. The occupation of Thomas (married to Mary) was "watch dial painter".Directories for 1874/5 and 1881 show Craven St. as a colony of Players all engaged in different aspects of the watch making business (mostly sons of Thomas/Margrt).I have addresses and occupations. Also some info. on Thomas (1803-1882)occupation/charitable work etc.
My late uncle was certain of a link back to 2 X Sir Thomas Player(s) (father [1602-72] and son [died 1686]).Both became, in turn, Chamberlain of London. I did research this link a little but was unable to bridge the gap so it might have been wishful thinking! He also assured me that we had a celebrated murderer in our ancestry!
There is a chance that you are the gentleman who contacted my father (James Player) a few years ago in which case this information will already have reached you via him. However, I would be very interested in further contact/update.If I can help you please let me know. I would love to trade info. although I suspect that you probably know more than I.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Melanie
