It is understandable that people are often reluctant to subject themselves to a Y-DNA test that might reveal concealed wifely infidelities in a 'proven' genealogical male line, whereby a different male's y-signature has been substituted into the male line of descent; or, similarly, it might reveal that a 'supposed' male line of descent is in error. However, a meticulous genealogist will wish to employ every means at his/her disposal to check out that all male lines of descent from a single male truly match; this can confirm that the matching (or near matching) lines are indeed male-line intact. On the other hand, if the lines do not Y-DNA nearly match, not all of the mismatching lines can be taken truly to descend from the same male ancestor within a genealogical time frame.
Y-DNA testing has shown that not all Warrens can have descended down male lines from the Plantagenets and I have every respect for those Warrens who are facing up to this 'negative' finding.
Apart from this rather 'negative' application of Y-DNA testing, which can destroy rather than help build a genealogical hypothesis, there are a few instances in which Y-DNA testing has helped to build a new theory. Certainly, any hype that DNA testing is a cure-all should be debunked. Nonetheless, I have written a brief review of the limited value of Y-DNA testing, for the Guild of One Name Studies. P.S. Given my own name, people sometimes accuse me (without good reason) that I myself am presuming to believe the nineteenth-century contention that the Plants are male-line descendants of the Plantagenets. Though this has captured the imagination of some Plants sufficiently to encourage me to look into the matter, on behalf of the Plant Family History Group, I do not myself believe that there is nearly enough evidence to sustain such a claim. I discuss this more fully at:
