Belva, I had a message typed and lost it so I will start again. Hopefully I won't lose it this time. I am not the primary researcher for this line of Pitts. This is the answer I received from one of the descendants of Elihu Pitts when I was questioning her for Proof that this James Pitts was the one married to Kesiah Johnston. In quotes: "Yes, we have definite proof of this from the data contained in the lawsuit brought against James Pitts in 1834. It is held in the Troup Co. GA. Archives and is entitled, "Rev. Moses Gunn and the Children of Thomas Johnston vs. James Pitts, Elihu Pitts and Ahab Johnston. When James Pitts died, his son and administrator of his estate, Laban Pitts, took his place as a defendant in this litigation. This suit was brought by brothers and other relatives of Kesiah Johnston Pitts, all descendants of Joseph Johnston, Keshah's father." There are also probate records in Troup Co and Laban and Elihu Pitts were named as administrators of James' estate. I think this pretty well establishes the fact that Laban was the son of James Pitts and Kesiah Johnston. James Pitts was in Jones Co GA in 1820 and 1830 census. He married a second time to Elizabeth Whatley in 1831 in Troup Co GA. Elihu Pitts and Laban Pitts were in Troup Co GA in the 1830 and 1840 census. Elizabeth Pitts, widow, was in Troup Co in the 1840 census. The will for James Pitts was brought to court by a Willis Whatley but it was challenged by Laban and Elihu. The following information was given to me by another of the descendants of James Pitts and Kesiah Johnston. In quotes: "I copied the information below from the Pitts notecards found in the folders for the Forrest C Johnson III manuscript collection upstairs at the Archives. The notecards contained information about Laban Pitts, James Pitts and Elihu Pitts. Laban Pitts filed to become the Administrator of James Pitts estate but the information found on the notecards indicates that Willis Whatley brought the will to court along with Laban Pitts on 03/15/1836. See information below. 03-15-1836 Elihue Pitts 3-15-1836 w/ Labon Pitts applys for temp admn on est of James Pitts offer bond $8000 sec.s John Vickers, James McGahey (McGehee) and Oliver P Watson all qv ALSO caveats will of James Pitts brought to court by Willis Whatley w/ Labon Pitts James Pitts 3-15-1836 dec'd as of this date, Elihue and Labon Pitts apply as admn on est and Willis J Whatley brings in will of sd. The 3-15 1836 date does not refer to the date the alleged will was brought in, it refers to the date when Elihu and Laban were appointed administrators by the Inferior Court, which in those days held, among their other powers, that of Ordinary (Probate) Court. The Inferior Court Minutes, from which those cards were abstracted, are just the minutes of the court, not a recording of wills. Apparently, the will, if there was one, was disallowed at the objection of Elihu and Laban, so never recorded. Sorry, Clark Troup County Archives P.O. Box 1051, 136 Main Street LaGrange, GA 30241 706-884-1828, fax 706-884-1840 End quotes: All of the above connects the James Pitts who married Kesiah Johnston in Newberry Co SC to the James Pitts who is found in Jones Co GA in 1820 and 1830 and it is pretty clear that Laban was their son. Anyone researching this line can e-mail me at nanmc@bellsouth.net and I can get them in touch with the researchers for this line of Pitts. I don't want to put their names and/or e-mail addresses on this forum without their permission. You ask how I know that this James Pitts and the Isaac Pitts that married Millie Clore were related??? DNA.. We have a DNA donor from a descendant of both James Pitts and Isaac Pitts and the DNA from both these donors match. This means that they share a common ancestor. James also had a son named Isaac. Do not confuse the two Isaac Pitts. The Isaac, son of James Pitts and Kesiah Johnston, was born abt 1812, he married first to Druscilla Pitts, daughter of Aaron and Nancy Pitts, in Jones Co GA. By 1840 Isaac was in Monroe Co GA and later died in Dooley Co GA. There are estate records for Aaron Pitts and also for Isaac Pitts to prove all of this. In addition, both Elihu and Isaac are listed as siblings to Lausia Pitts who married Balaam Peters in 1820 in Jones Co. The Isaac Pitts who married Millie Clore was in Cass Co GA by 1850. He was born about 1808. Census records indicate that all of his children except the last two were born in SC. It is unclear whether the son named Jasper was born in GA or SC, however, this means that Isaac was in SC as late as 1838 or 1842. I am undable to determine where Isaac was in 1840. We do know that Millie Clore was from Laurens Co SC. From 1850 the family of Isaac Pitts and Millie Clore have been traced. We have been unable to determine the father of this Isaac Pitts. You will find some family files that claim the father of this Isaac Pitts was Jehu Pitts. There is nothing to back up that claim. The direct descendants of Isaac and Millie are the ones who have done all of the legwork for the research on this line and they tell me that there is no evidence that this Isaac is the son of Jehu Pitts. When I say that they were related I mean that per DNA they shared a common ancestor. If you visit the Pitts DNA website http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/p/pitts you will see that the DNA for all of the donors in Group 2 match. This means that they all share a common ancestor and are related. For example, you will see my ancestor, Joseph Pitts, b c1800 SC. He migrated to AL/TN by 1815. He is clearly related to both of the Pitts lines mentioned above, however, he probably did not personally know any of them. Likewise, the Isaac Pitts married to Millie Clore may not have known the James Pitts who married Kesiah Johnston but they were still related. So far, I have been unable to determine exactly who the father of my Joseph Pitts was. We still have not determined the father of James Pitts, but, we think it was Levi Pitts, we just haven't found the proof yet. We also do not know who the father was for the Isaac Pitts who married Millie Clore. What we do know is that they all shared a common ancestor somewhere along the line. I am also not the researcher for the Isaac Pitts and Millie Clore line of Pitts. I can put you in touch with those researchers as well. Just e-mail me. Although I am not the primary researcher for either of these lines I have shared many e-mails with them so I am familiar with both lines. I think I have answered all your questions but I haven't just let me know. Nancy Notify Administrator about this message?
