SORRY FOR SLOW RESPONSE - I HAVE SO MUCH FAMILY RESEARCH ON THE GO I CAN HARDLY THINK STRAIGHT!ANOTHER RESEARCHER SENT ME THIS INFO FROM HER OWN FAMILY RESERACH -William Pitt aged 30, arrived in Melbourne aboard the ship Birman. He was accompanied by his wife, Jane Pitt aged 24 and Thomas Pitt aged 32, possibly William's brother. William and Jane had a child soon after their arrival although I can find no record of the birth. As the baby (Eliza) died at the age of seven months her birth place on her death certificate is given as North Melbourne and her father's occupation is stated as Artist.
The second child born to the couple was WILLIAM PITT, who in later life became the acclaimed Architect- his beautiful, sometimes Gothic looking buildings graced the street of Melbourne from the late 1800's tothe present day. Politics and a love of the Collingwood football club were known interests for him. He named his first child Elizabeth Collingwood Pitt.
Alice Jane Pitt was the third child born into the Pitt family in 1857, she died in childhood, yet I still have not found a date for the death. In 1859 a fourth child, John, was born and sadly died aged one day.
AND ANOTHER RESEARCHER FOUND THIS IN A LOCAL MELBOURNE NEWSPAPER FILE:
From the Melbourne Argus, Saturday 28th June, 1919. Marriages:
COOPER - PITT. On 29th May at St. Peter's Church, Eastern Hill, Richard Austin only son of R.A. Cooper 38 Collins Street, to Gladys Jessie, second daughter of Elizabeth Mary and the late HON. William Pitt.
Would this be the marriage of your friend Pam's parents? Quite likely I would think. Richard Austin Cooper was a dentist and his father was a dentist also. The details of this marriage I had already in my file for the Pitt family, it was just good luck that I found the Argus report online today.
ALL THIS INFO IS EXACTLY RIGHT.
I KNOW THE PITT FAMILY IS OF HUGH SIGNIFICANCE TO THE HISTORY OF AMERICA, AND PAM'S FAMILY WAS ALSO OF HUGH SIGNIFICANCE TO AUSTRALIA.Pitt St. in Sydney, Pittwater (bay) in Sydney Harbour, Pitt Town in outer Western Sydney suburbs, and of course what you can see of the Melbourne architecture.
Hope you enjoy.Kirsten
