I am a French-speaking native of Evangeline Parish, LA. Unfortunately, we were forbidden to speak French at school, however, our family continued to speak French at home. Sometime after I graduated from Sacred Heart, an enlightened school board imported French-speaking teachers to teach French in Louisiana schools.
