Alfred A. Pitman was the son of John M. Pitman, who was in Staunton, Virginia in 1850 and in Lewisburg, Greenbriar County in 1860. John M. was a "merchant" in both 1850 and 1860 censuses. John M. was born in Stephens City, Virginia about 1789, son of Andrew Pitman, a revolutionary war veteran, and then businessman in Stephens City, where he operated a pottery. This family is quite interesting because the children and grandchildren of Andrew Pitman moved to other Virginia towns and were usually involved in mercantile affairs. Many seem to have died young and their offspring for what ever reasons never married and if so never had children (as with Alfred). So the family became extinct after about three generations. I do not know if Alfred died in Harrisonburg or moved on elsewhere. He seems not to have stayed any where very long. I have not found record of his marriage to Elizabeth.
