John Owen Pitkin began manufacturing silverware in 1826. His brother Walter joined him as a partner in 1830 and took over this business in 1840. Their products were sold primarily at the Pitkin store in Hartford and were manufactured until the factory was destroyed in a fire on Feb. 2nd, 1880
