I am so thankful that this name has been added! Hello to Pirkles and Pirtles everywhere!
Our Pirkles are probably from German descent (in my opinion), and came by ship from the Netherlands to North Carolina before the Revolution. Some researchers think that our line of Pirkles may have been in Ireland for awhile before coming to the US. They were supposedly Protestants, and it is true that many German Pirkles were from the Palatinate area of Germany, and that many Protestants came from there to America in search of religious freedom in the 1700's.
John S. Thomas Pirkle 1, (b abt 1700, Ireland?)
John S. Thomas Pirkle 2, b 1725 (Netherlands?) m Charity Dibbs, lived near Wentworth, Rockingham(ultimately) Co (which land was also in Orange, Rowan, and Guilford Counties as the county lines were once drawn.)
John 2's son, John 3, was also found in Henry Co VA.
John 2 and Charity had many descendants, many of whom lived in NC or GA, some of whom went on to IN and KY. (Many of the KY line respelled the name as Pirtle -- but many of the early NC ones appear both ways in the records.)
Some families that their descendants married into include Cantrell, Brown, and Lawless.
