Hello Jean,There's at least 3 companies who are offering good autosomal programs. One of those that I use has the following description for their program:
Family Finder uses autosomal DNA (inherited from both the mother and father, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents, etc.) to provide you a breakdown of your ethnic percentages and connect you with relatives descended from any of your ancestral lines within approximately the last 5 generations.
Results Include:
genetic matches with relationship ranges, visual tools to show matching DNA, and ethnic percentages. Family Tree DNA does not charge a subscription fee. We will continue to update you about new matches and other information regarding your results
Should I Take Family Finder?
If you are interested in using DNA for close genealogy relationships (within the past 5 generations) that cross gender lines or if you are curious about your ethnic percentages, Family Finder is the right choice!**
• Matches These are genetic cousins who share a common ancestor within approximately the last 5 generations. You will have access to your matches’ e-mail addresses and any genealogical information they have provided. You can begin exchanging information as soon as your results arrive!*
• Predicted Relationship Ranges These are calculated based on DNA sharing with your genetic cousins.
• Chromosome Browser This is a visual representation of where you and your matches share DNA.
• Population Finder These are your ethnic percentages. They are based on a comparison of your results against population groups from around the world.
• Updates As our database grows, you will receive notifications about new matches. There are no subscription fees for this service!
Google the word autosomal and you should find as much info as you can take in.
Can be difficult to work if you don't have any other family members to test and with you to figure out your markers compared to a match you might find.My husband and I are both in that position but I tested both of us at two companies and seriously considering the 3rd company, Ancestry.com, when their new program gets going.I think it is a great investment and support it totally. The FTDNA stores your test kit for 25 years and if you "leave" it to a family member working genealogy your kin would be able to test your kit for a long time. This is possibly a very meaningful and valuable asset for your family.
For a female at the present time this Family Finder or Relative Finder for autosomal is the best test for trying to find current kinfolks.mtDNA is not very beneficial for present day but goes back beyond recorded history to the beginning of womankind through your mother and her mother and her mother and so forth back till the beginning of our time.
DNA is the future of genealogy and will prove the paper trail and is the trump card for finding blood kin. There are other kinds of kin that can mean as much but only blood kin will show up on DNA results.Let me know if I can help you find the company if you decide to test, etc.
