Major General Reginald Pinney, Commander 39th Division in the Great War Lived at Racedown, an estate at Birdsmore gate in Dorset (not far from Lyme Regis). He had an infamous military Career and was cited by Sasoon as 'The General that did for Harry & Jack' His cousin George Ambrose Pinney fared much better as ADC to Field marshal Haig and won an MC an Bar. His nephew Bernard Pinney was cited for a VC at the Battle ofSidi Rezegh in 1941. The last known Pinney in the British Army has just retired at the rank of Lt Colonel.
