Steve:

Matilda Gwathmey, b. 1829 d/o William B. Gwathmey, MD & Katherine (Akers)Gwathmey m. Benjamin F. Pinckney in Bushnell, McDonough Co., IL 7 May 1851. This simply points up the confusion in spelling of the Pinky, Pinckley, Pinkley, Pinckney, Pinkney surname in and around the Clay Co., IN Coles Co., IL communities.

If you will send my your address I will mail you a copy of the 1850 census of Posey Twp., Clay Co., IN that shows the family group following:

114 - 114 Willson Pinckley, age 31, M, farm er, b. IN
Martha Pinckley 24 F KY
Susan Pinkley 10 F IL
Ann Pinckley 7 F IL
Elizabeth C. Pinckley 3 F IN
Sarah B. Pinckley 1 F IN

Susan is Anna Susanna, likewise Ann is Sarah Ann (my geat grandmother) who named a son Fred Pinkney Reed. Compare the above with the IGI record that shows:

Robert Pinkley b. 1819 IN
Martha Ringo b. 1823 KY
Elizabeth C. Pinkley b 1 Jul 1847 IN
Sarah Belle Pinkley b.28 Mar 1849 IN
William Pinkley b.21 Feb 1851 IN

Since both Willson and Robert were b. 1819 they could be twin sons which could explain the combining of 2 families and 1850 cesus.
In my Reed family family there are two Bryans who m. Reed females: Joseph Bryan m. Charity Reed and John Bryan, Jr. m. who m. Mary Reed. From what I have discovereed to date it appears Joseph & John, Jr. Bryan may be descendants of Morgan Bryan and Margaret Daniels parents of Elizabeth Bryan, b. 1797 wife of Major Ringo parents of Martha Ringo who m. Robert Pinkley.
I see this as a possible explanation for the migration of my Reed family to Moultrie Co., IL. As I have previously commented the spelling of the Pinckney/Pinkney /Pinkley does not make much difference since they all appear to descend from the same root. Perhaps the ongoing DNA testing may provide answers.
