Seaching my own tree, I copied down the following info from the 1850 Onslow census:
James Piner 60 M Farmer
Sarah Piner 45 F
Hester Piner 22 F
James M. Piner 15 M
Julia Ann Piner 18 F
Ellen C. Piner 14 F
Sarah Piner 8 F
Elizabeth M. 4 F
Elizabeth Linquith 9 F
Catherine Piner 3 F
Gideon Piner 58 M

(Gideon was listed in the New Hanover census in 1830)
By the 1860 Onslow census, James must have died. James M. was now 22 and the household head. Sarah was 48 and listed as a market woman.
In the 1870 census, Sarah now 65 was household head and a farmer. She still had a whole group living with her but I think most were laborers and their children.
