Hi Loraine. My ggrandfather Robert Pelkington, son of Mary and William, came to NY City around 1880-1882. Married toKatherine O'Rourke. Both definitely from Ireland. Had 6 children born in the 1880's. The 3 living were Robert Christopher (my grandfather), John Francis(Jack) and William(Bill).
I found out about the spelling error when I found the death certificates for 2 of the earlier children and for Katherine. All the names were spelled Pilkington. All different years (1883,84,93) and all signed by different doctors. Their names were George, John and Mary Josephene. It made me stop and thing about a spelling change. The name is spelled Pelkington on the 1900 federal census and on the death certificate for my ggrandfather Robert(d. 1906) and also for the three living children when they were put into a catholic orphange after the death of Katherine.
This is pretty much all I know about my pelkingtons. I hope some of this helps.
I've found only 2 references to Pelkingtons in Ireland and that was from the Griffith Evaluation -- a William and a Samuel Pelkington. I'm pretty much at a standstill since all the death certificates I've accumulated only state Ireland as the place of birth - no village or parish names.
I'd love to have a copy of the Pilkington Pedigrees and the Ireland/England Pilkington info. Please e-mail me and we'll arrange something.
Thanks.
Margaret
