I have been attempting to track down Jesse Pitts Pilkinton born about 18 April 1840 in Maury or Giles County, TN. He was the son of James Smith Pilkinton and Cynthia Renfro. Apparently he took off to Texas around 1859 or so. This is what I have found: In an 1896 court paper-Rufus Crumley V. (the heirs of James Pilkinton)- filed in Giles County,TN, Jesse Pilkinton is stated to be a resident of Texas. That led me to search the Texas censuses. In the 1860 census of Grayson County, TX ,Jesse is living with the Richard B. Foster family. Richard Foster was a constable in Giles County and lived near the Pilkinton's in the 1850 Giles County census. Richard Foster was a Sergeant in the 16th Texas Cavalry C.S. and "Jesse Pilkington" is listed as a Private in the same Company. In 1864 and 1865 J.P. Pingleton (a common mis-spelling)and Sally Pingleton of Grayson,TX are listed as recipients of Indigent Families Pension (for Confederate families affected by the war). In 1870 census of Grayson County, TX the family is listed as living in "Kentucky Town" precinct #4 page 167: Pingleten, Jessie 28 M W Teemster Tennessee, Sarrah 26 F W Kentucky, Luellen 9 FW, Eugenia 4 F W, Charles M. 5/12 W M. In the 1880 Census of Cooke County(borders Grayson to the West)Precinct 3, page 288B: Pilketon, Jessey W M 40 Farmer (column for maimed or disabled is checked - war wound?)TN NC TN, Sarah W F 35 KY GA KY, Eugena W F 13, Charles W M 11, Unreadable name W M 8, Bob W M 4. This is all I have been able to find except for some Pilkinton's in the 1920 census of Cooke and Grayson counties whom I am unable to connect as of yet, but suspect they are descendants of Jesse and Sally/Sarah. I would like to correspond with anyone that has any information on this line especially 1900 and 1910 census and death dates/burial locations/marriage info, etc. If we can connect, I have alot of information on the Pilkinton line. This family may have spelled their name Pinkleton. Thanks for any help. James
