Am I to understand that British colonists referring to America was as recent as 1776, but it had been on a German map for over 250 years? Don't buy it. That's like saying that I descend from Queen Elizabeth because we have all the same ancestors 250 years ago. But we all know she didn't have any children that lived. I think the word "America" means "The Promised Land," and its derivation is unrelated to Vespucci.
