John Pilgrim of Norwich, Norfolk. Gentleman. C1822
Posted by: Brenda Azzaro (ID *****6039) Date: November 21, 2006 at 04:26:17
  of 754

ORIGINAL UK DOCUMENT - 22/10/1822

PARTIES
John Girling of Swanton Abbot, Norfolk. Yeoman.
Elizabeth (his wife), formerly Elizabeth Birkett, Widow.
Joseph Sewell of Norwich, Norfolk. Gentleman.
John Blake of Norwich, Norfolk. Gentleman.
John Pilgrim of Norwich, Norfolk. Gentleman.
Also relates to William Birkett of Beccles, Suffolk (d 1813).

SUBJECT
The document begins by reciting an indenture of 1816 in which John Girling borrowed £700 from the Rev James Wall on security of property in Swanton Abbot, Norfolk.

We are then told of an indenture of 1820 which it appears that the £700 mortgage was to be transferred to Joseph Sewell and John Blake. But Sewell and Blake only paid £300 to James Wall, the other £400 being due from John Girling to James Wall as a trustee for the executors of William Birkett (deceased).

Somehow, John Girling finished up owing £433/8/5d to Sewell and Blake, and wants to borrow a further £54. John Girling and his wife Elizabeth are giving a mortgage to Sewell and Blake on the 'freehold, charterhold and not copyhold' property of William Birkett in Beccles, Suffolk.

NB1. It looks as though Elizabeth Girling must be the widow of William Birkett and has a life interest in his property.
NB2. John Pilgrim is listed as one of the parties to this contract, but has no further mention in the first page of the document.
