The appointment/commission appears in the Journal of Congress for 7 Sep 1776 (available online or email me and I'll be happy to send an image).

I also have some information on the unit history. The VA riflemen join the MD riflemen under Col. Moses Rawlings at Boston. The unit including 1Lt. William Pyle were captured at Ft. Washington. There is a fair amount of information relative to their part in the engagement. They fought well against van Knyphausen's Hessians.

The U of VA library has a couple of notes which appear to be to support Pyle's pension application (available online or contact me).

Finally, Burgess' Virginia Soldiers of 1776, Vol.II:337 contains a transcript of the pension approval... I have not seen an online copy of Burgess; it was available at local historical society. Again, I'd be happy to send a copy.

Hope this helps.
