I have been trying via census records (reading each from the original because of the many mispellings in the transcriptions) and other internet postings to link my William Pile (Pyle)b.about 1809 and d. 2/20/1886 in Clarke Co., VA. He married in 1832 Anna Wade, dau. of Thomas Wade. His son, William Franklin Pyle, was born 3/17/1842 in Jefferson County. A William Pile (Pyle)does show up on the census reports for Jefferson Co., Frederick Co.,Berkeley, Co., or Clarke Co until 1880 - and in 1820 lived in Berkeley County as did Henry Bedinger. These counties changed boundaries so often! Also, I read a posting that said Margaret Wright Pyle married John Gant (Gantt) in Prince Georges MD, then moved to Berkeley Co., VA. My William ended up in Clarke County on land between the Burwell and Page families on Pyletown Road, near Millwood and Berryville. He was a cooper and probably had a big business with these 2 families (my guess, of course).
So far, the William Piles linked with the Key family or the VanMetre family don't seem to fit. There is also a John Pile that seems to stay in the area for many years, but I can't place him either. There are also land records that are mystifying!
Let me know if you solve this mystery!
Anne Johnson
