Linda -
It seems impossible, for me, to determine to which William Pyle/Pile the following information pertains -- William, {the son of William Pyle/Pile) and Margaret Wright} -- who (acc. to Elise Greenup Jourdan's book) was born in MD in 1755 and who is listed as Ensign, then 1st Lieutenant from Shepherdstown, VA (now WVA) & died c.1814 in Breckenridge Co., KY; and his cousin William Pyle (Pile), the first son of Richard Pyle/Pile (1726/27, Prince George's Co., MD - by 1780, Berkeley Co., VA - now WVA)and Elizabeth Sprigg, who is also listed as a 1st Lieutenant (Burgess, VA soldiers) & died c.1807 in Washington Co., KY. Both Williams, it appears, rendered military service from VA, lived at the time in or near Shepherdstown, and received substantial acreage (bounty) in Kentucky

HOWEVER, I found these references to a William Pyle/Pile in an old book, "Historic Shepherdstown" by Danske Dandridge published in 1910: Page 324 -- "Pyle, or Pile, William, Ensign in Capt. Stephenson's Company. Afterwards, in 1776, he was 1st Lieutanant in Capt. William Brady's Co. raised in 1776. He was on special service at the time of the Battle of King's Bridge. His name appears in the taxbook for 1797." He is also mentioned (Page 97) in the journal of one Henry Bedinger (of Stephenson's Company of Riflemen) as having joined up (in the sense arriving, or catching up with the Company) with the author at Peter Wolfe's Tavern (possibly in PA?) on July 17, 1775 while on the way to Boston.

It's possible that both of these statements apply to one or the other of the above described Williams -- or to both of them, their identities having been confused after the fact.

There are other surnames of people associated with the families of both Williams in the muster list for Capt. Stephenson's Company of Riflemen from VA (1775-1776).
