Hi Linda,
As you know from my earlier post we at the MA Aviation Historical Society have been collecting material on early Bay State aviation history in which the Pigeon brothers played a very important design and manufacturing role. Roy and Fred were partners in Pigeon Hollow Spar and its subsidiary Pigeon Fraser and later on Donald Pigeon became its General Manager. Both companies located on Coleridge Street in East Boston were prime government contractors to the U.S. Army Air Service and to the U.S. Navy as well. Since 1840 the Pigeon companies were principally focused on designing and assembling innovative hollow spars for yachts, fishing boats and sailing ships of all types. When aeroplanes constructed of spruce, ash and canvas came along in 1909-1910 the woodworking skills needed to build them made companies like Pigeon naturals to do this aviation wood and canvas manufacturing.
In our research files we do have newspaper articles and correspondence related to the Pigeon companies but we are sure there is more out there to help us finish the story of their interesting and important role in early aviation. Are there any family or company records that you have come across that would help us document the missing pieces in our research? We would be pleased to share what we have in terms of general references, biographies, articles and the few photos that exist.
