SUDDEN DEATH -- A man named Robert PIERSON, a Scotchman, aged about 40 years, while sitting last evening on a bench upon the outer edge of the sidewalk in front of ‘Nick’s Saloon,’ on the Levee, suddenly fell from his seat and before he could be taken into the saloon, expired. The deceased recently arrived in this city from Sonora, where he had been an inmate of the hospital for a year past, with a disease of the knee, which resulted in the amputation of a leg. He had upon his person a certificate from his physician attesting the circumstances attending his sickness, together with a sum of money amounting to $22. He had been indulging freely in drink, and was intoxicated at the time of his death. The body was taken to the office of the City Sexton, where the Coroner will hold an inquest this morning.

CORONER’S INQUEST -- Coroner DOWNING held an inquest yesterday upon the body of Robert PEARSON. The facts elicited were substantially the same as given in the ‘Argus’ of yesterday morning. Nicholas HARDALLO, in whose house PEARSON came to his death, testified as follows:
NICHOLAS HARDALLO, sworn: I know deceased; he has been stopping at my place of business on the Levee for 2 or 3 days; he told me he came to this city from San Francisco; he died at my place last night about 7 or 7 ‘ o’clock; I came in about that time, and was told by my barkeeper that the crippled man was drunk and lying on the bench in front of the door; he (the bar-keeper) and myself went out and brought him in and laid him by the stove until he should get sober, when I discovered he was cold; and thinking him in a fit, I went for Mr. DENNIS, who came and pronounced him dead. Deceased told me he was a Scotchman; that he had lost his wife in the States, and he had a son living there, but did not say in which of the States. He said he came to California to make money, and had lost his leg at Sonora; he told me yesterday that he wished he was dead; he also told me he intended to go to Lancha Plana today, but did not say why; said he had friends there; he never told me his name. Other evidence was taken showing that deceased had been a miner about Columbia and Sonora prior to the misfortune which resulted in the amputation of a leg. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that deceased was a native of Scotland, aged about 53 years, and came to his death from causes unknown.
