William, he is indeed the same man. They descend from the Abraham Pierson line of MA, and long Island, New York.
Captain Wyllys Pierson was the son of Rev. John Pierson. He's named in his father's will dated 22 Nov 1768 and proved 2 Sep 1770. Rev. John Pierson was Rev. Abraham Pierson's (president of Yale college) son. So he was a grandson of the immigrant Abraham Pierson who arrived in MA in the early 1600's and eventually moved to Long Island.

This Captain Wyllys was married to Mary Riggs and is named in her father's will. He moved from NJ to Washington County, PA by 1790. That's the last census he appears on. His children are:
Thomas b. ca 1754
John, born ca 1755
Abraham , born ca 1755
Matthias, born 25 April 1758, Rev. War soldier
Samuel, born ca 1761, Rev. War soldier
Daniel born ca 1765 last found in Washington Co, PA
Willis, Jr born ca 1770 , moved with his brothers to Hamilton County, OH.
he also had a number of daughter's.

His Captain probably comes from service in the French and Indian Wars.

This research was well documented. If you need more information, e-mail me at merryanne@bellsouth.net
