Wyllis(Wyllys) Pierson

I have four articles from the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research Magazine that were published in 1978. In the articles the writer, Charlotte Giltner of Grosse Pointe Shores, MI refers to Wyllys Pierson as Capt. Wyllys Pierson. My Wyllys matches this person as he was born in Woodbridge, Middlesex, NJ in 1725 and died in Duck Creek, Hamilton, OH in 1810. Does anyone know why he was referred to as "Captain" I can find no record of his military service.
