There is a Buford surname. Thomas S. Pierce is the son of William. But we now think that Wm had a brother, Jeremiah, who was the first of all of them to go to KY. J's daughter, Betsy, married Thomas Buford. Betsy would have been Thomas S.' cousin - kind of an odd naming if that was it. It is also possible that Bufords and Pierces were intermarrying earlier, and that it was from a previous, closer, tie.

This may be more than you need right now, but this is how it comes out of the computer program when I include the notes:

Surname: Garner, Roberts, Pierce
I am descended from Jeremiah Stanton Garner son of Parish Garner and Sarah L. Pierce. He was born in Wayne Co., KY and served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was a physcian and after the war settled in Coles Co., IL. In a biography in a Chapman Bros. Coles County book it states that he trained with J.S. Pierce in Garrard Co. I believe your Jeremiah was probably Jeremiah Garner's uncle but I cannot confirm this. Would love to exchange any information that would help.
