Hello Elizabeth,

Sorry for the delay in responding to your posting, but I have been rather busy just lately.

Having done some more research on your Lord family from Crawshawbooth, I am fairly convinced that the James Lord (born c.1832) who is a brother to your 3xgreat grandfather, John Lord, married an Alice Elston (or Ellston - seen the name with different spellings in 2 different places) in the December Quarter of 1857 at Haslingden (St James').

At the time of the 1851 Census, James is living with his parents, George and Alice Lord, at Chapel Lane Bottom, Crawshawbooth. James' occupation is shown as Joiner - Apprentice. In the 1861 Census (after his marriage), James is living at Major Terrace, Crawshawbooth with his wife, Alice, whose place of birth is given as Haslingden, which would tie up with where she and James were married. James' occupation is shown as Master Joiner employing 8 men and 2 boys. That ties up with the census 10 years earlier. There were no children living with them at this time. Ten years later, in 1871, James and Alice are living at Spring Gardens, Crawshawbooth, and again, James is shown as a Joiner employing 7 men and 3 apprentices plus an errand boy. Again, both his and Alice's age and place of birth are consistant with the previous censuses. Again, no children are in the household.

I have no idea why James and Alice are living at Lytham at the time of the 1881 Census, nor why James' occupation has changed to that of a Baker etc. I haven't been able to find them in the 1891 Census.

I hope that has been of help to you.

Regards,

Bill
