Part of the problem appears to be constraining Caswell's birth to Marion County (in the SE part of the state).
If true, the probability is that he was of the family group which included John Adrian (Redmon) Pickett, purportedly born NC in the 1790's. But, there is nothing to suggest Caswell was of John A (Redmon)'s family group.
Elizabeth Chenoweth was born in Washington County in NE TN, presumably the girl in Joseph Chenoweth's household for the 1830 Washington County census. For Caswell and Elizabeth to have their first child born 1832, they probably married 1830-1831. Joseph Chenoweth didn't migrate to AR until 1837-1843 (based on children's reported birth locations) so the presumption is that Caswell & Elizabeth had to have at least met, if not married, in Washington County.
Edmond married Agnes in 1846 after both families migrated to Madison Co, AR. Agnes' father migrated from Wilson Co which is in north central TN.
Caswell & Elizabeth's son, Wm J was found on the 1880 census for Behestian and Red Hill, Ouachita, AR in dwelling 65. Close by in dwelling 62 was Geo W & Louisa Pickett with his son Wm James & Joanna (Benson) Pickett. While it may be complete coincidence that two unrelated Pickett families were living in such close proximity, the possibility that they were related should be considered. Geo W was a son of Edward Pickett (b abt 1800), MD, purported son of Edward Pickett (born bef 1775, NC) of Dickson County, TN. Dickson Co is relatively close to Wilson County, where Agnes was born. The reason for looking at Edward (1775)'s family is that Edward's son, John, was enumerated on the 1820 census in Dickson Co with three as yet unidentified sons who would have been of the correct age to be Caswell - if they didn't die young.
Obviously, one CANNOT jump to the conclusion that Caswell was of that family line.
My database does not have any Caswells who married Picketts. The closest is Mary Hassel who married James Henry Pickett in 1824, Hickman Co, TN. Mary's mother was Mary Caswell. This family does not appear to be a likely origin for Caswell Pickett.
It seems that the first step would be to confirm or disprove a Marion Co birthplace for Caswell. If confirmed, attention would focus on the John Adrian family group.
Let's not forget that if he wasn't born in Marion Co, he could have been an immigrant - which would explain a sudden appearance.
In the absence of an identifiable paper trail, it's probably going to require descendant Y-DNA testing to localize the Pickett line from which Caswell descended.
