Hi,

You might want to check the book, "A Gathering of Pickett's" 1998 Alexander Publishing Vol I page 339,

"[ THE KENTUCKY ATLAS Thursday, February 17, 1849
Died in this county, on Thursday last, Mr. John Pickett, about 105 years old.
Mr. Pickett was a soldier [in the] Revolution, and was highly respected by all [who knew] him. He has left numerous descendants, [faded word] have been informed, to the sixth generation.
We {Hill & Johnson, authors} have been unable to identify "The Kentucky Atlas" newspaper, or to ascertain whether it was published in Fayette Co. It is simply a scrap that has survived. Rachel seems to have died between the 1824 deed to Walter Karrick, and the 1829 conveyance to Dabney Overton, since she does not appear on that deed. ]"

If the book that you are referencing is the Stella Pickett Hardy first edition, it has been largely discredited, as fictionalized. The 2nd ed, pub about 1958, attempted to correct many of the errors.

I have not noticed any other source giving Mason as an alternate name for Mace, though the CT Picketts did have a Mason in their family. Where did you find Mason as an alternate name for Mace? Or, was it an assumption to go with the Colonial Families mention?

I suspect that the Capt. John Pickett was not the same as John b 1744. My database has that he married Rachel Heathcoat, rather than Rachel Carr.

"Gathering" indicates that there were several John Pickett's living in VA contemporary with John b. 1744.

So, it does look like John, b. 1744, would be a qualifying ancestor for DAR but not as an officer. I don't know if DAR will accept "A Gathering of Picketts" as authoritative but you might want to give it a try as the family is well documented, at least through Younger. If not, "Gathering" references the obituary as the Draper Manuscripts; you can get a copy from the Mormon Family History Library, film #889,119.

Good Luck!

James Pickett
