Pickett/Piggott - 18th century - Haslemere/Chiddingfold, Surrey
Hi
I am looking for help.I am researching my Pickett/Pigott ancestral line and would be happy to share anything I have and/or to receive any info or advice that might help.
My interest commences, going backwards, with Jane Pickett who purportedly married William Collins, a house painter from Chelsea, probably in the mid 1830's, although I have been unable to find this marriage.
Children of this marriage were William John 7/4/1837, Mary Ann 1837-8, Henry 1841, Edward 1842-4, Emily 17/6/1845, Alfred 1847-8, Charles 1852-3 - all Chelsea St Luke area. The boys were all house painters like their father, except for Henry who was a carpenter. They all seemed to have spent all their lives in the same part of St Luke-cum-Worlds-End.
Jane is shown across the censuses with birth years 1811-4 with her death in 1875 age 64.Her birthplace is shown as Haslemere.LDS has a Jane Piggott chr 14/3/1813 in Haslemere parents John & Jane.
There seem to be two younger - James chr 5/11/1820 and William chr 17/6/1827 and three elder siblings - John chr 30/5/1802, Harriott chr 14/10/1804 & Sarah chr 24/9/1809 - all in Haslemere.
John Piggott (senior) married Jane Ellis 1/2/1798 in Haslemere. All looks good so far.
At this stage things get a bit tricky.Jane Ellis is presumably the one christened 20/8/1780 in Chiddingfold, parents Thomas & Jane. There is a John Pickett christened 13/3/1785 in Haslemere, parents John & Ann, but whose birth date I do not know. However, if it was close to his baptism then he would have only been 12 or 13 when he married - not impossible, but.........!especially as there is no obvious evidence of a little Piggott (or Pigglett) at that time.
A local alternative is John Pickett chr 11/1/1763 in Chiddingfold, father Abraham, although it might perhaps be that he was the father of the John 1785.He also seems a bit old.Another possibility, but a little further away, is John Piggott, chr 24/4/1774 at St Mary Guilford father John, or even John Piggott chr 3/12/1778 Oxted parents Wm & Ann.Any ideas?
It looks as if a number of the Haslemere & Chiddingfold Picketts relate further back to Abraham Pickett whose son Abraham married Elizabeth Matthew in Chiddingfold in 1755.However, I have not quite got to this point.
Help!
Thanks
Mick
