The following death notice appeared in "Connecticut Mirror," Hartford, February 10, 1823, p. 3: "DEATHS.... At Bennington, Vt. Mr. Saxton Picket, aged 42, only son of Mr. Phineas Picket, of Windsor, in this State."

From the "Vermont Gazette," February 4, 1823, p.3: "DIED - In this town, on the 30th ult. Mr. Saxton Pickett, aged 41 years. In this afflicting providence, our neighborhood's sympathies with his bereaved family. The deceased was a man of strict probity, and minutely honest in all his dealings. As a merchant, as a neighbor no man stood higher, - as a kind husband and tender parent, no one excelled him. The unfortunate termination of his life, the gloom which for a time past has shed its ebon sway over his mental faculties, and produced partial derangement, adds a deeper feeling of regret and sadness. - It gives a new and impressive example of the value of the blessing of reason, and our dependence upon the restraining grace of our Heavenly Father. A Jury of Inquest, as provided by the vigilance and humanity of our law, found a verdict that the deceased "Came to his death by his own hands, being in a state of insanity.
