Many queries have been posed as to the lineage of Hosea (born 1815) and Henry (born 1817) Pickett of North Carolina who subsequently migrated to Alabama, then Louisiana and Texas. Over the past couple of years, DNA information has become available. It leads, in conjunction with historical data, to a high probability as to their father being Ephraim Pickett, son of Thomas Pickett. Thomas Pickett’s will, signed 18 Sep 1802 - proved Sep Term 1805 lists his wife: Elizabeth Pickett and sons: John, Hosea, Jacob, Ephraim, and Thomas, as well as daughters: Mary and Nancy. Elizabeth is reported to have had 4 children from a previous marriage whose names are not in Thomas’ will. Y-DNA testing from a descendent of Hosea (born 1815) is an exact match for a line descending from Thomas’ son Hosea. Y-DNA from the William Sr. > William Jr. > Fredrick Pickett line of Duplin County North Carolina is NOT a close match for Thomas’ line. Y-DNA from the Virginia line of Pickett’s is, likewise, NOT a match for the other two lines. The censuses for Duplin and New Hanover counties, North Carolina were compiled for the year 1820. If enumerated in 1820, the Hosea – Henry family would have to show at least two males less than ten years of age in 1820. Thomas’ son John was not found in the 1820 census and cannot be excluded from consideration, as no data is available. Thomas, the youngest son of Thomas is reported as having died in 1805. Of the Picketts enumerated, possibilities for the Hosea – Henry household (those containing two or more males less than ten years old in 1820) include: • Ephraim: son of Thomas • John of Duplin County: son of James, son of Henry whose sons are known and do not include Hosea – Henry • William: who can be excluded by both historical information and Y-DNA results • Francis: who has no known relation to the Thomas line and does not appear in Duplin / New Hanover until after 1800 (and is believed to be a son of Micajah Pickett of the Virginia Pickett line) Thus, Ephraim, fourth son of Thomas Pickett, matches both historical information and Y-DNA results. Please note that Ephraim as father of Hosea and Henry can only be considered as a working hypothesis, with a high degree of probability. If Ephraim is the father, the census indicates that there was a third brother born after 1810 (as some have suggested, a third brother John). Accepting this probability the line then becomes {Hosea, Henry & ? } < Ephraim < Thomas Jr. < Thomas Sr. < Hosea. The origin of the founding Hosea, presumably present in Wilmington NC during, or prior to, 1735, remains obscure. Current working theories include 1) the Scotch-Irish migration of the early 1700’s and 2) an off-branch of the Connecticut / Massachusetts Picketts (based upon similarity of naming patterns, trades and the information provided [Pickett’s History of Alabama .. A J Pickett, 1851] that the Cape Fear region was settled in the early 1700’s by New Englanders).
