The first documented evidence (1665) shows that Michael, Abigail and Mary Pickerel came to America from England on the ship "Fellowship" and landed in Maryland. More than likely they were Scotch-Irish. The Pickerells were later in Virginia. You are descended from Henry and Rebecca Lowe Pickerell who were married in MD, and then moved to Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
From BURKE'S GENERAL ARMORY: "The surname Pickerel appears to be occupational in origin, and is believed to be associated with the English, meaning, 'one who carried a spear, [a warrior.]'"
