A biography/family history of Joseph Pickens is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 2, Image 500. His ancestors left England and settled in America in colonial times. His grandfather was one of the pioneer farmers around Newcastle, IN.
Joseph was born 14 May 1884, to William and Celinda (Thornton) Pickens, b. 1840 IN and 1840, Muscatine, IA, respectively. For several years they lived in Muscatine & then located to homestead at Powell, NE. William went to Virginia City, MT, as a gold seeker in 1862, and then returned to Muscatine, IA. Celinda died in Salt Lake City, UT, in 1905. William retired to Huntley, MT. Five chidren: Lopiz W., mail carrier at Huntley, MT; Rena; Walter R., farmer at Roundup, MT; Arthur O.
Joseph graduated from high school in Fairbury, NE, and for two years was a student at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City. The next two years he was an assayer at DeLamar, NV, and for a short time did some prospecting himself. In 1907, he moved to Huntley MT and set up a department store, and was postmaster from 1909 to 1919. He owned an 280-acre ranch three miles south of Huntley, and 80 acres of irrigated land one mile northeast of Huntley.
Sometime before the 1920 census, he married Amy L., born in Wisconsin, and his father William, and sister Rena, were living with them.
