I am the great grandaughter of Joseph Picard, granddaugther of Alexander Picard and daughter of Douglas Picard.Joseph was married to Mary Wolf, aka Maigon (meaning Wolf), who was a Keewanau Bay Ojibwe, born in Wisconsin.Joseph’s father was Antoine Picard, who the family thinks to have come from Ste. Hyacinthe, Quebec in 1799 with his brother Joseph. It is thought that they were third generation in Quebec. The brothers are found on the first Michigan census, but only because they were employed by the American Fur Company in Baraga.I don’t know what happened to the first Joseph.Perhaps he died or moved on.We understand through an old handwitten document that Antoine married 3 women, all of whom had French names, and that our foremother was named something like Vincende Roys (Rois, Roy?)It was his son, Joseph, my grandfather, and one of his brothers who married Ojibwe sisters. Our branch of the family had the luck to be part of a land inheritance hearing where we got quite a bit ofinformation.
I haven’t looked at this stuff for a long time, so I’m not being very specific here, but I know this is generally true – the first Antoine came from Quebec, then his sonsJoseph (born in the US) and maybe Charles (I can tell you next week if you don’t know yet) marriedthe Ojibwe sisters.
I posted htis wrong orignally on April 18.I meant to repsond to you.
