Richard, What a Great Project you have ahead of yourself, and as mentioned the Protection of Your Photos are Critical, and I would Start at Preservation & Protection.
Next - a Good Scanner that suitable for Black & White Photos, Along with a Software Application for Photos (Adobe Elements Version 6 is Excellent & Has Just received one of the Highest Ratings for ease of Use & Features). You can Open up your Photo Software and Scan Photos Using Features Like Cropping, Adjusting Exposure, Setting Lighting, etc. I like the 400 dpi Scanning Resolution, but You can Increase that - If you want larger prints, or you can increase the size of the print by doubling the Image Size.

LAST - A Site Location for Sharing Items with your Family, and I noticed you said "My Family" - Well, I have Thousands of Friends from Military Groups that have Used My Family because, it's "Free" or a Small Charge to eliminate ads, and it will have everything you need to upload some very large files for members of your family to print some high quality prints.
