If you are fortunate enough to have inherited old photos you have an obligation to share them. My family has always done just this.
Not everyone feels that way. Some people hoard. Years ago on a visit to my father–in-law where many family members were present, he pulled out a lovely old photo album with all photos identified. My nephew, his grandson, asked to take the album (return it) and make a slide show for all family members. I piped in that it was a great idea. No way, this was a treasure only to be shared when people visited. He didn’t actually say that but dismissed the idea.
This grandson had always visited them even at his own expense as a young man. He was not into genealogy as such but had an interest in these old photos of his ancestors and was willing to do the work and share.
As a married-in I just bit my tongue. Now the grandfather has Alzheimer’s: what will happen to the photos? I was probably the only person in the room who picked up on my nephew’s interest. This is very sad.
