Can tin photos be restored?

Sometimes a dummy gets lucky..I scanned a totally black tin type my 2nd Great grandfather carried through Civil War and discovered that the image got sharper with each scan. After 50 scans the image of my 2nd great grandmother holding my 10 month old great grandmother in her lap appeared in great detail, (even babies birth ring showed up) I use mikrotek's scanner for my Mac G3 and photo deluxe software by adobe and zoomed in and repaired blotches, scratches, and gave her back her earing. The best DPI to scan is 300 DPI. I have also scanned photos 1850-present and found that 1850-1935 to be highest quality. Now if only Mac users were not treated like orphans, and some programer for FTM Or UFT would offer US a new version, maybe I could get these photos into their scrapbook or library and put my own album together.
