There may be an easier way to do that with Adobe Reader 6.0.
I just "round-tripped" a jpg image from my Photo Editing software to pdf format (using pdf995) and opened it in Adobe Reader 6. Then, by using menu selections available on the Adobe Reader Toolbar, etc., it was possible to get the image back to my Photo Editing software seemingly intact. (PhotoImpact 6).
There appears to be no loss of detail.
It is my understanding that many organizations are using pdf files as a wrapper for their graphic files for storage
and searching purposes.
