If your digital camera has no TIFF, save them in camera at the highest possible file size, then when you transfer them to your resave them as a TIFF file, this way you won't lose any more data.
My camera does save in TIFF format, this results in an 18.2mb file! They are rather large.
Another option would be a camera that store's in RAW format, but these are generally more expensive.
