Steven, Thanks for the response(s). I've been in contact in the past with Perkins, and the two DNA results he cites in the rootsweb page with reference to Solomon Phipps are from me and a distant cousin who is a documented descendant of Solomon. Since we two are in Haplogroup G, and no other Phippses in Perkins study are genetically close, it appears that there is no connection with your line or other Phipps arrivals to American back in the 1600s. So on reflection and in light of that, I'd guess you and I are chasing quite separate ghosts. As for the John Phipps - Elizabeth Neighbors story, I've noted it in several places, but have never been able to find a single source citation for the claim. It seems fairly clear that somebody put this story out in the late 1990s or earlier, and people just picked it up and put it in their data base without further commentary or sourcing. It's kind of maddening since I assume whoever started the claim had to have had some reason for making it, i.e. he or she didn't just willy-nilly dream it up. But I've had no luck in identifying such a person. I'll check out the Google search method you suggested and let you know if I come up with anything of interest. Cheers, Russ Notify Administrator about this message?
