That Jacob is the son of Jacob and Jennie Thompson Phipps that was born in 1849.

I think I agree with you. Do you know where that Phipps Family Cemetery is at there? I have listed in Jacob and Jennie's information that they were buried in a Phipps Cemetery in Knox County.

There are a lot of John Phipps in our family line as well. My grandfather, great grandfather, and 3rd great grandfather were all John Phipps. Your John was most likely named after Jacob's uncle John who was the brother of his father Gasper. Several of their other children have family names with the Jacob (after himself), John (his uncle), Catherine(his aunt), James(another uncle), Margaret(grandmother), William (grandfather and uncle, Mary Ann (first cousin from our line).

We don't know much about Gasper except after his father died he moved to Marion, Virginia and worked for the Prestons as a miller with his wife Margaret. They both had some colorful families. Margaret's brother was murdered by a bar keeper after impregnating Gasper's sister. Gasper's sister Mary Polly actually took him to court for child support even back in 1800 for the out of wedlock baby so it was big news back then and she actually won the case. After Gasper died Margaret is listed as an indigent in Seven Mile Ford Virginia and I haven't figured out if they are random people that took them in or if the Sophia she is living with is her daughter. Gasper's other son we've confirmed as Hiram Phipps since they listed males in the household even as minors on county census records. He is my direct line. He was very interesting and we found a Southern Claims Commission line on him that he explained a lot of his life. He had one son fight for the union and one for the confederacy. In the papers he swore he was a union supporter but then we found him listed on the people who voted for succession so needless to say his claim but denied but we learned personal things about them we didn't know. Hiram stayed in Marion and worked for the Preston family as a miller as well.

Gasper's father was Lt William Phipps. We aren't sure where he came from at all but we know his wife's name was Rebecca. They came to Wytheville Virginia in 1770 after getting a land grant for his service during Dunmore's War. Their records are spread between Montgomery, Fincastle, and Wythe County records because the lines changed several times in a 30 year period. We're assuming since that was basically just a Virginia war he came from somewhere out east there. Even with our DNA testing though we haven't been able to really link things yet except for some very distant cousins in Grayson County Virginia which seemed to have been related before they moved to the US whenever that was. William was a prominent guy that had a downfall with gambling. He was a surveyor and leader in the local militia around the Revolutionary War. We haven't found anything that links him to real service during that time directly besides just being in and out of the militia, but his house was burned and attacked by the Tories. They probably didn't finger him out for just no reason I'm guessing. After he died all of his son's left the area and spread out from there. His son James we know died in Kentucky in 1851 and Issac died around Abingdon Virginia. We have no idea what happened to his older sons George and William. William might have stayed in Wythe for a little while if he was an oldest son and been in the militia. That would explain the mixed up records on rank changing around but nothing after his father dies in Aug 1818. We have his will but besides names it didn't give us much.
